Skylark - Rachmaninoff "Vespers"

An apocryphal story recounts that when conductor Nikolai Danilin first heard Sergei Rachmaninoff play the score for his All-Night Vigil  (‘Vespers’), Danilin said “Where am I to get such basses? They are as rare as Asparagus at Christmas!" In the fall of 2019, Skylark presented the greatest masterwork of a cappella music as it had never been heard before: a performance of the finest professional vocalists in the United States anchored by world-renowned basses joining forces for the first time ever. After what was described by many Skylarks as their most profound concert experience ever, we vowed to re-visit the work again soon. Join us again in June 2022 for an encore performance, this time working from a new edition of the score prepared by Artistic Director Matthew Guard and Skylark Soprano Fotina Naumenko.

Santa Fe Desert Chorale - "Pilgrimage: Songs of the Mediterranean Basin"

We explore the cross-pollination of cultures that call the Mediterranean Basin home, catching a glimpse of Spanish, North African, Jewish, and Arab peoples through their sacred and secular music. Fifteenth-century songs from the Spanish Cancionero de Palacio stand beside Moroccan folk melodies, Middle Eastern hymns, Levantine chants, and Sephardic love songs in a joyful celebration of this musically rich region. Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Fattah Abbou, hailed as a “North African music master,” guitarist Jeremy Mayne, and percussionist Polly Tapia Ferber join sixteen Desert Chorale singers for a program that unites these Mediterranean cultures through song.

July/August 2022
Santa Fe Desert Chorale - "Mystics and Mavericks: Celebrating Female Sages and Innovators, Both Ancient and Modern"

Showcasing works of medieval feminists ahead of their time: Kassia, the only woman composer in the Byzantine liturgical canon and Hildegard von Bingen, a patron saint of musicians. We celebrate composer Meredith Monk—MacArthur fellow, two-time Guggenheim fellow, and National Medal of Arts recipient—with a selection of works that was recently released for choral performance, and has not been heard in New Mexico. Caminante, the Chorale’s 2022 commissioned bilingual work by award-winning composer Jocelyn Hagen enjoys its world premiere. We are also proud to feature another composition from our 2021 commissioned composer, Reena Esmail. Music by Moira Smiley, in-demand American singer and composer whose choral works are performed around the world, rounds out this powerful program.

An exciting new generation of American composers is featured: Jake Runestad (Waves), Mason Bates (Sirens), and Matthew Lyon Hazzard (The Prow, When We are Gone). Also featured is Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae (Song of Maritime Disaster) by Jaako Mäntyjärvi, inspired by the 1994 sinking of the MS Estonia in which 852 lives were lost. As one of the leading American chamber choirs, the Desert Chorale embraces its role in preserving our country’s folk music heritage. This program closes with a combination of American sacred harp, spiritual, and folk arrangements.

PREVIOUS PERFORMANCE SEASONS

2021

January 2021: Verdigris Ensemble - "Betty's Notebook"
Betty’s Notebook is a controversial piece of evidence in the Amelia Earhart mystery that some believe records Earhart's final distress calls. Betty Klenck recorded the notebook at 15 in 1937. She spent the rest of her life showing this document to researchers. In 2005, Ric Gillespie, founder of TIGHAR, found the evidence compelling and worthy of publication. The musical adaptation of Betty's Notebook recreates Betty Klenck's experience: as if audiences sit in front of a shortwave radio and turn a tuning knob to try and hear Amelia Earhart's haunting distress calls clearly, but frequently encounter various radio interferences. Betty’s Notebook is the historic first programmable music NFT (non-fungible token) minted and sold on the blockchain.

Both employed at the Court in Mantua, Monteverdi and Rossi came from different backgrounds, but they shared a common musical language. Excerpts from Rossi’s Hashirim Asher Li-Sh’lomo and Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 demonstrate that our common shared artistic heritage is greater than our cultural divisions. Sixteen of the Desert Chorale’s Early Music specialists will be joined by period instrumentalists: Maxine Thévenot, Organ; Stephen Redfield, Violin; Lorenzo Colitto, Violin; and Katie Rietman, Cello

July/August 2021: Santa Fe Desert Chorale - "Roaring 20's"
